Damian Gascoigne is an animation artist and educator. His independent films have won multiple nominations and awards at international festivals including Annecy Animation festival, British Animation Awards, DOK Leipzig, Hiroshima, Seoul, and Zagreb. In 2012 he founded the Bachelor of Design Animation degree at UTS; now ranked #12 in the world.
Gascoigne’s exploratory animation practice fuses hand drawn imagery with generative ai technology to investigate materiality, imperfection, and transience. His practice-led PhD at RMIT explored Buddhist ideas around non-attachment to devise performative and meditative modes of drawing. Recent exhibitions include ‘Summoning Apparitions,’ a Gen AI magic lantern show for SXSW Sydney 2025, ‘Fold’ brush drawing, finalist for the Paddington Art Prize 2025, ‘Jagi,’ finalist for the Lester Portrait Prize 2022, and ‘Cel; the Artist as Animator’ exhibition in Bathurst Regional Gallery 2022. He recently completed a chapter on experimental AI for the forthcoming Routledge Companion to Animation Studies.
